Opportunity research

What a target shortlist can actually establish

Sources

Search universe

Openly available business listings, lawful company information, sectors and public records. Proprietary feeds require separate lawful access.

Buyer profile

Recorded buyer criteria

A named buy box with range, geography, industry, recurring revenue preferences, operational fit and deal-breakers.

Deliverable

Evidence-labelled targets

Entity resolution, source date, confidence limitations, advertised sale status, material gaps and one next document to seek.

Boundary

Restrictions

No assumption that an off-market company wants to sell; no cold solicitation, success-fee brokerage, seller introduction or legal representations.

Example of the written process

  1. Confirm acquisition budget, target business and geographic licensing constraints.
  2. Define exclusion criteria and public source scope.
  3. Review candidates, resolve duplicate entities and retain source references.
  4. Present up to the agreed capped number of candidate profiles, with missing facts identified.
  5. Obtain separate written approval before any wider investigation.

A shortlist is not an offer for sale and does not establish deal availability, seller willingness or financial suitability.
